Air fryers are designed to cook food rapidly. Due to its compact design, the fan can circulate hot air very quickly and hence cook the food fast.
That’s why people think that it uses a lot of energy to run the appliance. But that is not the case, in fact, an air fryer consumes comparatively less power than conventional ovens.
They are very easy to operate and cost you pennies for running it for hours.
If you ask me this question:

Do Air Fryers Consume A Lot of Power?
The answer is no, it does not use a lot of power to run, in fact, it consumes very little energy than the other electric appliances in this range. For example, if you run a 5-quart air fryer for about 30 minutes then it will cost you only $0.072.5 (if the cost of electricity is 10 cents per kWh).
So, you have seen how cheap is to run this type of appliance in your home. To get you a clear idea, I have compared the electric consumption of some models of different sizes so that it can help to make your decision.
How Much Power Do Air Fryers Use?
The power consumption of an air fryer totally depends on the variant you use. Most households have the 3 to 4-quart size which is ideal for a small family and this appliance will cost you pennies for using half an hour daily.
Because most of the items that you will make in the air fryer will require only 10 minutes to preheat and another 15 to 20 minutes to cook, even your favorite chicken recipe also.
So in half an hour, a 3 to 4-quart air fryer will consume only 0.7 kWh of energy, which will cost you only $0.07 to $0.091 (taking 10-13 cents per kWh) or $0.14 to $0.182 per hour.
Check the below chart to get an idea of the ideal power consumption of an air fryer.
|Models||Wattage||Power Consumption (per half an hour)||Cost Per Half An Hour (taking 10 cents per kWh)|
|Ninja Air Fryer (AF101) – 4-QT||1500 Watts||0.75 kWh||$0.075|
|Ninja Max XL Air Fryer – 5.5-QT||1750 Watts||0.875 kWh||$0.0875|
|GoWISE USA 3.7-Quart Air Fryer||1400 Watts||0.7 kWh||$0.07|
|COSORI Air Fryer Max XL – 5.8-QT||1700 Watts||0.85 kWh||$0.085|
|Dash Tasti Crisp Electric Air Fryer Oven 2.6-QT||1000 Watts||0.5 kWh||$0.05|
|Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 2-Basket Air Fryer||1690 Watts||0.845 kWh||$0.0845|
No matter how big or small your air fryer is, the cost of operation is very low compared to other electric appliances.
So, it’s always better to purchase a bigger variant than the smaller one because you can cook food for more people if you have guests in your home, and also it will not occupy that much space on your countertop.
How To Calculate The Cost Of Using An Air Fryer?
To give the cost of operation of every air fryer will be difficult that’s why it’s better to know the formula to find out the exact cost of using it.
Because if get out your best one and want to know how much it will cost you for day-to-day operation then you should know the formula to find it out.
So, here it is…
Formula: kWh = (Watts X Time) ÷ 1000
For example, if you want to find out the power consumption of a 1500 Watts air fryer and want to use it for 1 hour then you have to multiply the watts by the time of using it and then divide it by 1000 to get the exact kWh.
Let’s do it…
Given Wattage = 1500 Watts and Time = 1hr
Now, kWh = (1500 X 1) ÷ 1000
kWh = 1500 ÷ 1000
kWh = 1.5
So, if you use it for half an hour then just multiply by 0.5 and you will get the value. In this case, it consumes 1.5 kWh for 1 hour, and for a half-hour, it will consume 1.5/2 or 1.5*0.5 which is equal to 0.75 kWh.
And to find out the cost, multiply the kWh by the amount in your local area. According to Electricchoice, for most of the areas in the US, it is an average of 10-13 cents per kWh, so, if you use it for 1 hour it will cost you 1.5*0.10 = $0.15 or 15 cents per hour.
Are Air Fryers Cheaper To Run?
If your area’s power rate is 10-15 cents per kWh then, yes, it is cheaper to run an air fryer. It will only cost you pennies for using it for an hour.
For example, if your area’s electricity rate is 13 cents per kWh then a 1500 Watts air fryer will cost you $0.195 per hour.
And if you use it daily for a year then it will cost you:
For 30 days = 30*0.195 = $5.85
For 1 year or 365 days = 365*0.195 = $71.175
So, you have seen how cheap is to run it for a year, if you use it daily for 1 hour.
Now, if you compare this result to an oven then it will cost you more because an oven will consume more power than an air fryer, and also it will take more time to cook. That’s why the cost of operation of a conventional oven is always more than an air fryer.
Also, the cost of maintaining it is less because you don’t need to do regular servicing. If you clean it just after the use and keep it safe, then it will last you for many years.
Do Air Fryers Use Less Electricity Than An Oven?
If you compare a regular oven with an air fryer then you will notice the power consumption of both the appliance is almost similar but the only difference is that the air fryer cooks food faster and consumes less power than the oven.
So, the answer is yes, if you use it for less time but if you run both the appliances for similar time then both will consume almost similar power. But, in the long run, an air fryer will save you more money than the oven because of its low maintenance and fast cooking.
Does The Ninja Foodi Use A Lot Of Electricity?
The Ninja Foodi air fryer is available in different variants like 2-basket, 1-basket, and 6 in one function, 9 in one function, etc and also in different sizes like 5-QT to 8-QT whose wattage ranges from 1400 watts to 1800 watts.
So, the 5-QT variant will consume = (1400*0.5)/1000 = 0.7 kWh and it will cost you 0.7*0.10 = $0.07 for using it for half an hour.
And the 8-QT variant will consume = (1760*0.5)/1000 = 0.88 kWh and it will cost you 0.88*0.10 = $0.088 for using it for half an hour.
So, you have seen that the Ninja Foodi does not use a lot of electricity to operate, hence, it is very cheap to operate.
You have seen that your air fryer does not require a lot of electricity to run it. So, do air fryers use a lot of electricity? The answer is simply no, it does not consume a lot of power, even it is very cheap to operate.
A 3-Qt fryer will consume as low as 0.6 kWh of power which will cost you only $0.06 per half an hour of operation. And the larger variant will cost you only $0.085 per half an hour of usage. So, the charges will be easily fit your pocket.
